A 16-year-old student and an adult staffer have been injured in a reported stabbing attack at a school in the region.
Emergency crews in Rensselaer County were called to Troy Community School on 5th Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 for a stabbing inside the building.
Troy Police said the juvenile victim and another male student got into a fight inside the school when the suspect pulled out a pocket knife and injured the other student.
A member of the school’s security team responded with other staff members and attempted to break up the fight. As they did so, the teen injured the security staffer with the knife, police said.
Both the 16-year-old victim and the school employee were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said both are expected to make a full recovery.
The 15-year-old suspect was arrested at the school and was treated for a minor injury to his hand. He is expected to be charged in Rensselaer County Family Court.
No other students or staff members were injured.
Following the attack, a hold-in-place order was issued for the campus. An hour after police were called, students were released early to their families.
District officials said there would be an increased police presence on campus out of an abundance of caution.
“We are grateful for our strong partnership with the Troy Police Department and thank them for their immediate response this morning to the Troy Community School," the district said on Twitter.
Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello thanked the police department for its “quick action and coordination” with the district in apprehending the suspect.
“It’s a top priority to keep our youth and schools safe,” Mantello said. “We will continue to work together to keep our schools and community safe.”
